Have you ever gotten on a plane and noticed a member of the cabin crew subtly look you up and down as they greet you?
Well, it turns out they have a very important reason for doing this.
A flight attendant from the US has been sharing secrets of her job on TikTok and has most recently explained what the ‘ABP check’ is that they complete during boarding.
In a video on the social media platform, Kat Kamalani revealed all, saying: “Have you ever walked on a plane and seen the flight attendant standing right here, greeting you, or the flight attendants walking up and down the aisle?
“Well, I’m about to tell you what we’re really doing…”
She continues: “So when you’re walking on the aeroplane and you see our happy, smiley face, we’re actually looking you up and down, we are trying to find our ABPs and what that is called is our able-bodied people or person.
“So this is people who are going to help us in an emergency.
“So for example, military personnel, firefighters, nurses, doctors. So in case of emergency, like a medical emergency, or we are going to land the plane, or there’s a security breach, we know who’s on our plane and we know who can help us, but we’re also looking at one more thing.
“We’re looking for things that don’t quite belong on the plane, like a box full of like liquid on the side.”
Kat adds: “We’re looking for human trafficking, it happens a lot in the industry and our passenger safety is our number one priority. So we’re just looking for things that look off.”
Her video quickly went viral, garnering over 969,000 views and more than 194,000 likes.
Thousands of people also took the time to comment on the post, sharing their thoughts.
Some were confused about how the staff could tell what a person did, just by looking at them.
Kat later clarified: “Some say, ‘Hey I’m a doctor in seat 34A just in case’, which we appreciate.”
Someone else wrote: “I will now think of this every time I board a plane.”
A different user added: “Wow… I had no idea.”
Another person joked: “I caught one looking me up and down and thought she disapproved of my Adidas bottoms and comfy top for flying!”
“Good to know,” replied a fourth.
